Absa Bank Uganda now offers contactless functionality on Visa debit cards

Absa Bank Uganda recently unveiled the contactless tap functionality on its vertical Visa debit cards and POS machines. Following the launch of the Absa brand in Uganda in November 2019, the bank introduced the new Absa Vertical Cards with new and enhanced features. One of the key features on the vertical card is the contactless functionality.

This gives customers the ability to pay by simply ‘tapping’ the card on a contactless enabled point of sale (POS) terminal once the card has been enabled.

The contactless “Tap” solution comes at a time when there is an increased need for the adoption of cashless payment options in the face of growing safety concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be spread through touching infected objects and surfaces.

The innovation, a first in Uganda, follows a growing trend that has seen an increase in the use of cashless options on the African continent. A recent Mastercard survey in the Middle East and Africa shows that more than 70 per cent of respondents were by March 2020 using some form of contactless payment.

This is in line with a simultaneous surge in the use of internet and mobile payment options on the continent with banks and various merchants preferring the use of cashless alternatives as the world steadily but surely adapts to the disruption.

Absa Bank Uganda has recorded a 40% increase in digital transactions between the start of the year to June 2020. Absa’s contactless feature marks a further fundamental shift in the cashless ecosystem of Uganda with the added advantage of much quicker transaction times.

Speaking during the launch of the functionality, Annette Kiconco, Absa Bank Uganda’s Ag. Retail Banking Director, said: “The contactless function uses a Near Field Communication technology to allow payments from a contactless enabled card on a contactless supported payment terminal. With convenience and safety being one of the key trends in modern consumer culture and in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Absa’s contactless feature has responded to both these consumer needs with a single functionality.”

Our customers can now transact with ease and spend less time at payment tills. Additionally, the cards have also been rendered more secure by reducing the opportunities for fraud from point of sale entities. This enhanced security feature gives our customers peace of mind as they go about their daily transactions,” Absa’s Kiconco added.

“Being the first bank in Uganda to roll out this function, we are steadily building a reputation for innovation in the digital financial services sector, making Absa the banking partner of choice in the industry,” Kiconco concluded.

A study by global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney showed that contactless payments accounted for more than 20% of the card-based point-of-sale retail transactions in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and Korea and that by taking a look at the world’s top 15 economies by GDP, contactless card payments accounted for more than 10% of all point-of-sale transactions.

Huawei’s ICT Academy: A Fertile Soil for ICT Talent Cultivation

Huawei’s ICT Academy: A Fertile Soil for ICT Talent Cultivation

In May 2019, Huawei ignited an Information Communications Technology (ICT) Academy in Uganda to Improve the number and quality of IT professions in the country. The Academy was a result of a pledge offered by Huawei to H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni during his visit to China, Huawei pledged to train over 1000 Uganda ICT talents through its ICT Academy at no cost for students.

Since its launch, the Huawei ICT Academy has attracted thousands of enthusiasts and students with multiple accreditation points mounted at Uganda’s top Universities. Initially, Huawei signed an MOU with Makerere University as the center of the ICT Academy, before seven more Universities joined the race to host regional Academies.

Among the approved Universities, Makerere University Business School (MUBS), St Martyrs Nkozi, Kabale University, Soroti University, Muni University and Mbarara University of Science and Technology endorsed the Huawei ICT Academy certification path with a pool of over 800 students trained as Proffessionals.

Annually, Top Talent students who excel in the Academy’s competitive professional courses tailored to prepare them for the job market, stand a chance to compete in the global Academy competitions for an all expenses paid trip to China, and on a lucky patch, win Internship opportunities in Huawei Uganda’s Enterprise and customer Technical divisions.

Even with the Current COVID19 Pandemic, the Academy continues to certify students online with over 200 students currently undertaking different certification paths. But just like Student Success stories, Huawei Academy Instructors continue celebrate new heights.

Among the top Instructors in Uganda, Mr. Olin John Peter from Makerere University is a Huawei ICT Academy Instructor who has benefited from not only being an academy Instructor/Teacher, But also Improved his status as a key contributor in Uganda’s Technology ecosystem.

According to Olin, his journey with the Huawei ICT Academy flips back to 2018 when he joined a Bootcamp hosted at Makerere University where he won an Invitation to TTT (training designed for prospective instructors of Huawei ICT Academies).

“With prior experience, training and practice of one vendor, sometimes the cross to another vendor is a steep one, mainly considering the change in implementation, platform and command structure. I, with some other extremely committed intelligent people managed to make it through the challenge and became Uganda’s first Huawei Certified Academy Instructors (HCAI Routing and Switching).”

By emerging as one of Uganda’s first ever Huawei Certified Academy Instructors, Olin as a certified tutor embarked on a journey of unprecedented learning and training of Students at the Makerere Huawei Academy to mentor skill filled, practice oriented, and creative minds ready to join the real-world Technology ecosystem.

Through various hands-on simulator, and cloud-based trainings in Network Engineering, Cloud Technologies, Cyber Security, among others. The Huawei ICT Academy programs empower students with top notch ICT skills to leverage the high demand of IT Professionals in Uganda’s workforce sphere.

As a certified Instructor, 70% of Olin’s all-time academy students are currently certified as Huawei routing and Switching associates. A Majority of these also work in Huawei Uganda’s technical departments putting learnt skills to immediate enterprise, service provider and technical use.

Personally, I was fortunate to take more than 100 students, so far, through these trainings, of which more than 70% successfully passed. Most of these start as interns, who are after a short period of time awarded contracts to work with Huawei or one of the various Huawei Partner Companies in Uganda. These include MTN, Airtel, and some special tech sensitive projects of the country.

By garnering exposure as Interns with some of Uganda’s top Technology brands, excelling students get to know and be part of the technical architecture, design, implementation and maintenance of ICT systems.

With Instructor level trainings capped at expert level, Olin has embarked on expanding his academy involvement by Upgrading from the base Instructor level to Professional, and currently planning to upgrade to expert level certification as he confirmed:

“With the Huawei ICT Academy, learning never stops, and opportunities never end. I was able to up my R & S Certification to Professional Level, by successfully self-preparing for HCIP’s 3 examinations, which I sat and passed successfully.  What’s more, I successfully passed the first and most essential exam to the Expert level Certification in Routing and Switching (HCIE R&S), and now left with Lab and Interview exams, which I will take on this year.”

Furthermore, as a run-to place for equipping ICT students with top notch skills, guidance, Internship offers and Technology centric jobs. The Huawei ICT Academy continues to groom both students and Instructors through its global academy competitions where International University scholarships, grand prizes including a USD 30,000 take home for the overall global winner are offered.

Likely, Top 11 participants at the national stage and best Instructors receive numerous rewards from the competition, making the Huawei ICT Academy a must-enroll for young Technology enthusiasts in Uganda, with several Universities currently offering the academy’s top courses and resources.

Artificial intelligence and dating: how AI affects your choice of partner

Artificial intelligence and dating: how AI affects your choice of partner

The world of online dating has transformed romance in many ways. Now, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised to make a serious impact on the world of online romance. AI systems are thriving on dating sites like, improving the way we find our soul mates.

Here are some ways that AI is going to change the way you find love in the future.

Artificial intelligence as the perfect love coach

The first way that AI is going to impact the world of romance is by helping to train people in the art of love. There are so many people out there who can only be described as clueless when it comes to romance. Whether you haven’t watched enough movies or interacted with enough people, it’s clear when someone has no idea how to approach a relationship.

Yet, artificial intelligence is appearing on dating services in the form of chat-bots. Not only will they help a person get used to flirting and chatting with someone, but they could also help you learn about good dating habits. An AI could train a person in proper responses to inquiries and comments that allow them to grow their potential as a romantic partner.

That way, guys will learn how to not scare off a woman by making an inappropriate comment, and women can recognize when a man is giving off signs he is interested in her. These are a few of the potential ways that AI can be utilized to make people better at love before they even try dating in the world of online romance.

How artificial intelligence works on dating sites

There are several different ways that AI can interact with dating sites. As AI continues to grow more popular and potent, it will have various impacts over time. In the present, though, it’s highly likely that AI will be working behind the scenes to help people find their partners.

A limited form of AI is currently in use on many dating services with the singular goal of helping to connect individuals on the site with a good match. There are so many dimensions to a person’s romantic lifestyle that it can be very difficult for them to know what they’re seeking or what would make a good match for them.

Artificial Intelligence has the power to study a person’s profile and then apply that information to a matchmaking service, and some can even learn from the dates that didn’t work out well the last time! These AI can only do so much, though. However, they are getting better all the time. Chat-bots are another application that we’ve already covered in relation to AI.

Other available tools are facial recognition match making, where you can find someone with specific looks and features with a single click. This tool is usually limited to some of the high-end sites.  AI is going to take on a bigger role in the future, and everyone should prepare for it now.

The future development of AI in the online dating industry

As always, it’s necessary to examine the future to see what impacts new technology will have on romances. The single most important development is going to be an end to the swiping phenomenon. Quite simply, there will no longer be a need for people to seek out partners on their own.

A future dating service with integrated AI will consult the users’ profile and then decide as to whether another user’s profile is compatible. If so, then it will send out a message to the profile owner and they can decide what to do. Another major development to be expected with AI in dating is a program that learns from the user. It’ll watch your social media interactions and conversations with people to learn more about your personality, and then it will use that data to help make matches.

Some people call this a very invasive form of technology, and they’re not wrong. Yet, if you are going to have a product making romantic efforts on your behalf, then it will have to understand your needs and desires on more than a superficial level.

The world of online dating will undergo significant and rapid changes shortly. More and more dating services are going to integrate artificial intelligence into their design. That will change online dating from the user-driven experience that it is today into a process that requires relatively little input from the user.

On the other hand, there are some privacy concerns that have to be brought up and dispelled before people start buying into this form of dating. The same push-back was experienced with online dating in its earliest forms, though. The bottom line is that dating should become easier and more successful in the very near future.

You can now pay at Game Stores using Airtel Money Pay

Airtel Uganda has launched a partnership with Game Stores that will see Airtel Money subscribers pay for their purchases using Airtel Money Pay.

What is Airtel Money Pay? It is a service that enables Airtel Money subscribers to pay for goods and services using Airtel Money instead of exchanging cash for such purchases. The service enables both parties to immediately confirm these proximity payments via text message (e-receipt) that is sent to both subscriber and seller of the goods/service.

Commenting about this partnership, Airtel Money Head Merchant Portfolio Mr. Godfrey Muhindo noted that this new partnership will bring the highest level of convenience to Airtel subscribers who shop at Game stores.

This payment method is going to ease the lives of our subscribers. Customers no longer have to carry cash or withdraw money, then pay when they are shopping here at Game,” he noted.

Muhindo also noted that the Airtel Money Pay innovation is timely as it is giving Ugandans an alternative and safe payment method in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking on behalf of Game Stores, Frederick Olwit, the Game Store Manager, welcomed Airtel Money Pay onboard and thanked Airtel Uganda for the partnership.

Our clients can now transact conveniently and securely from their Airtel accounts and pay for their shopping without hassle,” he said.

As merchants, once we receive the money on our Airtel account, we can use it to make other transactions like payments or transfer it to the bank.

Mr William Kaye, the Managing Director of Universal Tracking Systems and a customer at Game Stores who has used the service confirms the effectiveness of the product.

After shopping, I came to the till and made my payment via Airtel Money Pay. The till attendant immediately confirmed payment and in less than a minute, I was done. The service is indeed very fast and did not require me to pay an extra fee,” Mr Kaye said.

At the launch, a lucky draw was held for members of the media and three lucky journalists each received cash sent directly to their Airtel Money accounts to do shopping at the store.

How to pay at Game Stores using Airtel Money

To use Airtel Money Pay, Airtel subscribers use the *185*9# code to initiate payments to the merchant by dialing the said code, which prompts them to input the merchant number/ ID, Amount and eventually a PIN to complete a payment. The subscriber can also put in the other transaction reference details like invoice number or purpose of payment.

Alternatively, the merchant can also initiate a transaction on their SIM menu and the subscriber will only input their PIN to complete the payment process.

The service can also be accessed at: Javas, C&A pharmacy, Jumia, Fraine Supermarket, City Oil, First pharmacy, Viva hardware, Kafiika Feeds, Ugachick, The Alchemist among other outlets.

5 Tips to ensuring your phone battery lasts longer

5 Tips to ensuring your phone battery lasts longer

Gone are the days when you could have a spare battery for your phone. So that when the one in misbehaves or gets wiped out, you can quickly insert in the spare and keep the phone running. The advancement in technology can now feasibly accommodate the non-removable power packs in most smartphones on the market of late.

But this comes at a rather high cost! You can hardly get a battery replacement if yours no longer functions to expectations, and if you are lucky to get one – it is quite expensive. Plus, environmentalists will lecture you on how much a disaster these gadgets are to the environment.

It is evident that having your smartphone battery last longer is the ideal need all smartphone holders have. We have compiled for you some tips on how to preserve and extend the lifespan of your phone battery.

ONE: Do away with fast charging

Yes, regardless of why you wish the battery to get charged fast, doing this often stresses it and affects its productivity. This is through using charger cables not meant for the device model, as well as employing mechanisms that pressure a lot of charge into the phone.

We strongly recommend that you avoid using fast charging and opt for slow options and methods. One of the better ways is charging your phone using its original charger or one that matches with its model type.

TWO. Don’t let your battery fall to 0% or charge to 100%

You might not notice it immediately but completely draining the phone battery or fully charging it stresses it. We recommend that you keep your phone always above 20% battery capacity and never beyond 90% (unless you plan on travelling and will have no access to power in a while).

Actually, if it is within your means, always plug-in your phone when at 20% and plug-out when at 90% to use it.

THREE: Lower your screen brightness

One of the key consumers of a smartphone’s battery is the screen – which we know works well when bright enough. So, lowering the screen brightness will save you a lot of energy. We recommend that you use the phone’s Auto Brightness feature as this also comes in handy to effectively reduce battery consumption by automatically reducing screen brightness when in open light.

You can also save the battery by reducing the Screen Timeout time. You can set the screen to always shut down after 1 minute or even 30 seconds if you are not using it so that you keep it low on brightness.

FOUR: Do away or turn off apps that waste battery

There are apps that consume battery as long as they are open! These are dangerous and you ought to do away with them or turn them off if you are to keep your battery in fine health. Make a clean sweep through your battery settings for such apps and delete, disable, or restrict permissions on them.

For apps you want to keep using, you can restrict permissions you don’t need. We also recommend that you opt for the lite versions of apps where possible because these take up less space, use less data, and effectively use less power.

FIVE: Always store your phone in a cool dry place

If your phone gets very hot or cold it can damage the battery and affect its health. It is appropriate that you ensure that the phone is kept in a cool dry place; one that is not hot, not cold, but in between there.

How to share your screen in Facebook Messenger

How to share your screen in Facebook Messenger

Since the coronavirus kept us all home and mostly online, Facebook has been busy upgrading its Messenger’s capabilities. One key feature that has been on demand is screen sharing, just the way Zoom and Google Meet offer them.

So, Facebook is also expanding the Messenger app’s screen sharing capability to the iOS and Android mobile apps. Key to note is that the screen sharing feature has been available on the desktop version of Facebook Messenger.

With it, you can share a live view of your screen with other people one-on-one or in a group video call with up to eight participants. The options are limitless: be it via your camera roll, when doing online shopping, browsing social media, name it.

This feature is also being rolled out to Messenger Rooms which allows for up to 16 people in a chat at the same time. Users who create a Messenger Room will be able to specify who has permission to screen share with the group. The ability to screen share in a Messenger Room can be given to just the room creator, or select participants, or all participants.

How to Screen Share in Facebook Messenger

You can start sharing your screen in Messenger through the following steps.

Start a video call in the Messenger app by selecting one or more contacts and tapping the camera icon. Swipe up on the toolbar at the bottom during the call, which brings up an expanded menu. From the expanded menu, tap Share your screen.

Facebook, back in April, launched the first standalone Messenger app for desktop, which is available on Windows and macOS. The desktop app offers a number of benefits over using Messenger in a web browser, the most valuable being unlimited and free video calls. You can also share your screen on this one!

What is Bolt Go, the company’s low cost service?

What is Bolt Go, the company’s low cost service?

Ride-hailing platform Bolt this week launched a new low-cost service called Bolt Go in South Africa. Through this, the company aims to be the cheapest ride-hailing service in the country, with fares approximately 20% less than regular rides. The company says the addition of the new category is to empower owners and drivers of hatchback cars to access the platform and earn an income.

Smaller hatchback cars are less expensive to purchase, have lower maintenance costs, and are more fuel-efficient to operate than Bolt’s regular larger sedan cars. These lower operational costs also enable Bolt Go fares to be significantly more affordable.”

Given that the Bolt Go service is designed for hatchback drivers, the service is not ideal for trips with lots of luggage but is perfect for people wanting to quickly, safely and affordably get to work and about.

The service, which has already been successfully tested in East London and Port Elizabeth cities, is now being rolled out to all 35 cities and towns across South Africa where the ride-hailing app is active. Time and kilometre-based rates vary between locations but will always be approximately 20% more affordable than Bolt’s standard sedan category.

All trips in the Bolt Go category will include Bolt’s existing Trip Protection – a no-cost, value-added insurance product that covers all passengers and drivers across all car categories in the case of an accident or unexpected incident.

Cars eligible for Bolt Go

The Bolt Go category is open to standard hatchback cars in good condition with low mileage, that pass a 45-point safety inspection and that seat at least four passengers in addition to the driver. Bolt anticipates that popular models will include the likes of Volkswagen Polo Vivo, Datsun Go and Toyota Etios.

The new category gives consumers even more choice in addition to the existing categories that Bolt offers including Bolt (the original sedan category), Isolate, Premium, XL and Van.

Hatchback cars may only operate in the Bolt-Go category. However, the company has enabled the drivers of its regular larger sedan cars, who may be experiencing a quiet period, to opt-in and out on an ad-hoc basis to the new low-cost service to boost their earnings and maximise their earning potential.
