You can now create, join and manage Rooms in Messenger

In late April this year, Facebook launched the Messenger Rooms to allow users to conference with other people at a time. The new service was unveiled to compete with the other video conferencing apps that had sprung up in the coronavirus outbreak like Zoom, Houseparty, among others.

At the time of launch, Facebook said 700 million people are chatting on daily video calls on Messenger and WhatsApp combined. There are also now over 800 million daily active users across Facebook and Instagram Live, and the company is constantly adding new features to make Lives even more useful.

It is evident that the Rooms service has already become popular among Facebook users. The company is now rolling out a completely new and easier way to create and discover Rooms within the Messenger app. In the development, you can now create, share, manage and drop by a room all within your app.

Some of the features to enjoy within Messenger include:

  • Discover Rooms: Rooms that you have been invited to will show up at the top of your Chats tab in your Inbox.
  • Create Rooms: Ability to create a room is front and center in your Chats tab.
  • Edit Rooms: You can create a room with a default, suggested or custom activity, set a future start date and customize your audience selection.
  • Manage Rooms: View, join, and edit the rooms you have created. You can also invite more people to a scheduled room and delete a room you don’t want to be active anymore.
  • Share Rooms: Send notifications to ensure your invited friends don’t miss out.

Facebook is also introducing the ability to customize your background with your own photos. This means that you can now video chat from your favourite sunset. You could even customize your background with a funny home video.

Facebook also recently launched a Messenger app for MacOS and Windows to let users easily video chat on their desktop computers and stay connected with friends and family anywhere across the globe.

The 2020 Kampala Innovation Week is going virtual

The 2020 Kampala Innovation Week is going virtual

Kampala Innovation Week (KIW) 2020, the fourth in the event series, will be held virtually for the first time. This has been announced by Startup Uganda, an association of Ugandan Innovation and Entrepreneurial Support Organizations (IESOs) that currently counts  20 members.

Under the theme “Recovery & Resilience: Innovation and Entrepreneurship as a tool for the youth” the event will be held virtually from 26th to 28th of November 2020.

The KIW 2020, supported by the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the International Trade Center (ITC), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Enabel, aims to bring together startups, social innovators, investors, corporations, development partners and government ministries, agencies and departments to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on entrepreneurship and innovation in Uganda.

More specifically, a range of innovative solutions related to the COVID-19 pandemic challenges as well as opportunities that have emerged will be discussed.

The three-day event aims to:

  • Explore the different ways in which SMEs can recover and thrive in a post COVID-19 economy.
  • Highlight the ways in which various eco-system stakeholders (ESOs, governments, academia, investors etc.) can contribute to these recovery efforts.
  • Share case studies of entrepreneurs and startups who have demonstrated resilience and innovation in tackling the impact of the pandemic .

The COVID-19 pandemic has had various effects on businesses. Businesses have had  to reframe their models, repurpose their work streams, halt operations, or close to mention but a few. Going forward, the recovery and resilience of small and medium enterprises is critical in ensuring that lives and livelihoods are improved.” –Richard Zulu, Startup Uganda.

COVID-19’s disruption to ‘normal’ ways of work and business across many sectors has made many more receptive to using digital solutions to address day to day challenges,” says Chris Lukolyo, the Digital Country Lead at UNCDF. “Supporting initiatives like the Kampala Innovation Week is one of the ways through which UNCDF promotes inclusive innovation to deliver services for the local digital economy.”

We realized that we have a lot in common with Startup Uganda. Both our work involves supporting SMEs, tech hubs and startups within the Ugandan ecosystem to participate in profitable businesses through which jobs are created for the youth, men and women.  The plan is to synergize the efforts of Startup Uganda and the Netherlands Trust Fund (NTF IV) Uganda project for the good of the Ecosystem by bringing together entrepreneurs, buyers, investors (both local and foreign) and policy makers to make a comfortable environment for business linkages and knowledge sharing” says John Ndabarasa, Startup Engagement Associate at NTF IV Uganda and #FastTrackTech projects of the UN – International Trade Centre

Due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic and the associated social distancing guidelines,  the KIW will this year be primarily virtual, and will leverage robust online resources and learning opportunities across the global innovation space to meet the needs of the startup ecosystem in Uganda. This virtual experience will include provoking conversations from thought leaders on the latest in Ugandan innovations, and collaborative discussions on concrete next steps for the startup ecosystem.

Some  foreseen discussion topics include the following:  “Shifting from damage control to sustainable renewed methods of conducting business;  “Policy and investment dialogue for ‘the new normal’”,  and “Staying ahead of the curve in order to thrive and not just survive”.

Over the course of three days, over 2000 attendees will be able to engage and network with speakers and peers, attend sessions of their choice, and virtually browse through the exhibition halls in real time through the event platform, Whova.

To register or exhibit at the event visit the Kampala Innovation Week website.

Huawei Uganda unveils the Sky Seeds for the Future program

Huawei Uganda unveils the Sky Seeds for the Future program

Huawei, a leading global ICT solutions provider, has announced the 2020 edition Seeds for the Future Program known as the “Sky Seeds for the Future” despite the Covid-19 pandemic. The announcement was made by the Public Relations Manager Ms Lina Cao who emphasized that the company shall carry out the program this year through online learning platforms.

Ms Cao encouraged universities in Uganda to recommend their students to take advantage of the world class training program aimed at equipping and nurturing students through exposing them to the latest industry technology trends.

The Seeds for the Future program started in Uganda in 2016 and has been ongoing since then. Every year the top 10 university students in ICT-related courses are selected for a study trip in China. Approximately 30,000 students have benefited directly from this program globally since its inception.

This year however, the program is going to be different due to the effects of Covid-19 pandemic.

The Seeds for the Future will be carried out online. It’s called the Huawei Sky Seeds for the Future. Just as the previous years, we have always had several activities such as student selection, interviews, closing ceremonies, two weeks training programs in China in the latest technology, it shall continue the same way this year but online. We are excited to add that the program this time round is open to more than 100 students. They will, among other things take part in training and exposure to 5G and cloud computing,” Ms. Lina Cao, the Public relations Manager of Huawei Uganda, explains.

She adds that; priority shall be given to outstanding undergraduates/graduates who have a strong interest in ICT, female students are strongly encouraged to apply and also those with vast ICT Knowledge of Huawei and understanding of China.

Out of the 30 plus students who have participated in the previous four years of the program in Uganda, approximately 22 have directly benefited from Huawei internship and job opportunities availed to them. For instance, Ms Cleopatra Ajambo who participated in the 2018 Huawei Seeds for the Future program has risen from just a computer science student to an IT network architect working with Huawei Uganda.

As a Computer Science Student, you were expected to dig deep into programming as a major which was not, and is not most girls’ passion, so I found myself relying more on getting good grades than building a career as a problem solver,” says Cleoptra, whose goal for joining the Seeds for future competition was to travel to China for exposure.

The program was launched by H.E Yoweri Museveni in 2016 and has been in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of ICT of Uganda.
