Bitcoin now worth over $19, 000 for the first time in 3 Years

Bitcoin now worth over $19, 000 for the first time in 3 Years

For the first time in close to 3 years, Bitcoin has crossed the $19, 000 mark. It is not surprising that this comes after breaking the $17, 000 and $18, 000 within the same week. Analysts believe that bitcoin is already about to beat its all-time high of $20, 089 which was reached on December 17, 2017.

They also suggest that bitcoin’s limited supply of 21 million makes it a good hedge against inflation. Some investors think the value of traditional currencies will fall as governments and central banks unleash massive stimulus packages to support economies hit by COVID-19.

As a growing number of institutional investors enter the bitcoin market, led by PayPal and GrayScale, it is becoming more apparent that bitcoin’s value as a hedge against macro-economics grows by the day. The digital currency began the year below $1,000 and its gains have accelerated as investor interest grows.

The market capitalization of bitcoin also hit its all-time high this week at about $329 billion, according to data provided by crypto analytic firm CryptoQuant.

It is worth noting that some of the reasons for the sharp rise include the:

  • demand for riskier assets amid unprecedented stimulus programmes to counter the COVID-19 hit;
  • hunger for assets perceived as resistant to inflation; and
  • expectations that cryptocurrencies will gain wider acceptance as a method of payments.

Read About: CitiBank believes Bitcoin price could hit $318,000 by 2021

Just a couple of weeks back, a leaked technical analysis prepared for its clients pointed to the Bitcoin price hitting $318,000 in December 2021. This was revealed by a Twitter user Alex, who leaked the document created by Thomas Fitzpatrick, an executive at Citibank. The analysis does suggest that Bitcoin “price is likely to continue to go up, and a lot.”

Huawei Cloud drives success for African e-commerce platform

Huawei Cloud drives success for African e-commerce platform

Cloud and app store support play a critical role in ensuring the success of e-commerce platforms in Africa. This was the view from Lulu Haangala Wood, co-founder and CMO of Afrishop, an e-commerce hub offering convenient, quality shopping and affordable logistics to the African market. She was speaking at the Huawei Cloud & AI Forum at the online AfricaCom 2020 event, part of the Africa Tech Festival from November 9-13.

Afrishop launched its offering supported by Huawei Cloud, providing convenient online shopping and affordable logistics and courier services. Afrishop’s aim is to create a more convenient and affordable delivery service for consumers looking for quality goods from China.

In its launch and development, Afrishop got support from Huawei Cloud infrastructure and Huawei AppGallery, the app store on Huawei smartphones.

We are available on Android and Apple app stores, but our competitive advantage has been that we are available on the Huawei AppGallery on Huawei phones, which are widely used in Africa,” said Haangala Wood. “Having that partnership from Huawei to push our app in the app store really helped us, and we saw a big uptick in downloads.

She said there had long been a need for a good supply-chain management system to African consumers. Afrishop set out to provide convenience and affordable last-mile delivery, right to the customer’s doorstep.

We offer B2C and B2B services for customers who want to purchase individual pieces, as well as fulfilment of bulk orders,” said Haangala Wood.  “Our main services are online shopping and supply chain management, and our solution is faster, easier and more convenient than other platforms. Our customer has access through both our app and our website, because apps don’t have a big uptake in all African territories yet.

Haangala Wood said Afrishop had seen 10 000 downloads in its first week and had continued to grow over the past nine months. The platform operates in Zambia, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, and Angola.

Influencer marketing has been a huge part of our strategy, as well as offline marketing through traditional media, which remains relevant in the African market,” said Haangala Wood. “However, our core has been digital marketing. With our current app, distribution and listing in the Huawei app gallery comes at zero cost.

We continue to improve our app and hope we can continue our great partnership with Huawei Cloud,” said Haangala Wood. “Covid-19 did hit us, but we are excited to see that more people are looking to e-commerce as their preferred shopping channel.”

Altogether, there are 36 categories in the 2020 Digital Impact Awards Africa including 17 that recognize best performing digital and financial players from across Africa and 19 categories purely focused on Uganda.

The #DIAA2020 edition comes in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, an unprecedented period that has on one hand wreaked socio-economic havoc across the world, but on the other hand further showcased the life- serving and saving capacity of digital-financial services (DFS).

The 36 categories include two special recognitions. These are: Regulatory Financial Inclusion Rails Award, and Women in FinTech Leadership Award.

Regulatory Financial Inclusion Rails Award

World over, regulators are key enablers of financial inclusion in some cases by adopting provision of digital financial infrastructure as a public good. Regulators lead the provision of a national digital identity to all residents, the development of a real-time payment systems and the establishment of a favourable legal framework.

The Digital Impact Awards Africa “Regulatory Financial Inclusion Rails Award” is a special   recognition of initiatives, programs and projects that are setting up the needed financial inclusion infrastructure rails with key emphasis on instant (real-time) payments platforms in Africa.

Just like most countries especially in Africa, Uganda still struggles with a huge gender diversity challenge in the financial technology space. Only 10 per cent of the 41 FinTechs that took part in the 2020 40 Days 40 FinTechs initiative had either women co-founders or women in their senior management.

The limited involvement of Women in Financial Technology is unfortunate because they are the majority gender world over and most importantly, their last-mile utilisation of financial technology solutions is very high. As such, the #DIAA2020 Women in FinTech Leadership Award seeks to recognize and appreciate a Woman that is taking lead in bridging the aforementioned gender diversity challenge.

Minus these two special recognitions, the rest of the categories will include jury assessment and public voting that will commence on Thursday 19th November until the eve of the awards.

The awards gala will be the climax of the #IncludeEveryone – Digital and Financial Inclusion Summit that will happen on the same day.

This summit will explore the strategic trends and technologies that are shaping the future of Digital, IT and business. The summit theme will be “Collaboration to Advance Safety and Security towards Sustainable Financial Inclusion”.
