The 2020 Kampala Innovation Week is going virtual

The 2020 Kampala Innovation Week is going virtual

Kampala Innovation Week (KIW) 2020, the fourth in the event series, will be held virtually for the first time. This has been announced by Startup Uganda, an association of Ugandan Innovation and Entrepreneurial Support Organizations (IESOs) that currently counts  20 members.

Under the theme “Recovery & Resilience: Innovation and Entrepreneurship as a tool for the youth” the event will be held virtually from 26th to 28th of November 2020.

The KIW 2020, supported by the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the International Trade Center (ITC), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Enabel, aims to bring together startups, social innovators, investors, corporations, development partners and government ministries, agencies and departments to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on entrepreneurship and innovation in Uganda.

More specifically, a range of innovative solutions related to the COVID-19 pandemic challenges as well as opportunities that have emerged will be discussed.

The three-day event aims to:

  • Explore the different ways in which SMEs can recover and thrive in a post COVID-19 economy.
  • Highlight the ways in which various eco-system stakeholders (ESOs, governments, academia, investors etc.) can contribute to these recovery efforts.
  • Share case studies of entrepreneurs and startups who have demonstrated resilience and innovation in tackling the impact of the pandemic .

The COVID-19 pandemic has had various effects on businesses. Businesses have had  to reframe their models, repurpose their work streams, halt operations, or close to mention but a few. Going forward, the recovery and resilience of small and medium enterprises is critical in ensuring that lives and livelihoods are improved.” –Richard Zulu, Startup Uganda.

COVID-19’s disruption to ‘normal’ ways of work and business across many sectors has made many more receptive to using digital solutions to address day to day challenges,” says Chris Lukolyo, the Digital Country Lead at UNCDF. “Supporting initiatives like the Kampala Innovation Week is one of the ways through which UNCDF promotes inclusive innovation to deliver services for the local digital economy.”

We realized that we have a lot in common with Startup Uganda. Both our work involves supporting SMEs, tech hubs and startups within the Ugandan ecosystem to participate in profitable businesses through which jobs are created for the youth, men and women.  The plan is to synergize the efforts of Startup Uganda and the Netherlands Trust Fund (NTF IV) Uganda project for the good of the Ecosystem by bringing together entrepreneurs, buyers, investors (both local and foreign) and policy makers to make a comfortable environment for business linkages and knowledge sharing” says John Ndabarasa, Startup Engagement Associate at NTF IV Uganda and #FastTrackTech projects of the UN – International Trade Centre

Due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic and the associated social distancing guidelines,  the KIW will this year be primarily virtual, and will leverage robust online resources and learning opportunities across the global innovation space to meet the needs of the startup ecosystem in Uganda. This virtual experience will include provoking conversations from thought leaders on the latest in Ugandan innovations, and collaborative discussions on concrete next steps for the startup ecosystem.

Some  foreseen discussion topics include the following:  “Shifting from damage control to sustainable renewed methods of conducting business;  “Policy and investment dialogue for ‘the new normal’”,  and “Staying ahead of the curve in order to thrive and not just survive”.

Over the course of three days, over 2000 attendees will be able to engage and network with speakers and peers, attend sessions of their choice, and virtually browse through the exhibition halls in real time through the event platform, Whova.

To register or exhibit at the event visit the Kampala Innovation Week website.

Huawei Uganda unveils the Sky Seeds for the Future program

Huawei Uganda unveils the Sky Seeds for the Future program

Huawei, a leading global ICT solutions provider, has announced the 2020 edition Seeds for the Future Program known as the “Sky Seeds for the Future” despite the Covid-19 pandemic. The announcement was made by the Public Relations Manager Ms Lina Cao who emphasized that the company shall carry out the program this year through online learning platforms.

Ms Cao encouraged universities in Uganda to recommend their students to take advantage of the world class training program aimed at equipping and nurturing students through exposing them to the latest industry technology trends.

The Seeds for the Future program started in Uganda in 2016 and has been ongoing since then. Every year the top 10 university students in ICT-related courses are selected for a study trip in China. Approximately 30,000 students have benefited directly from this program globally since its inception.

This year however, the program is going to be different due to the effects of Covid-19 pandemic.

The Seeds for the Future will be carried out online. It’s called the Huawei Sky Seeds for the Future. Just as the previous years, we have always had several activities such as student selection, interviews, closing ceremonies, two weeks training programs in China in the latest technology, it shall continue the same way this year but online. We are excited to add that the program this time round is open to more than 100 students. They will, among other things take part in training and exposure to 5G and cloud computing,” Ms. Lina Cao, the Public relations Manager of Huawei Uganda, explains.

She adds that; priority shall be given to outstanding undergraduates/graduates who have a strong interest in ICT, female students are strongly encouraged to apply and also those with vast ICT Knowledge of Huawei and understanding of China.

Out of the 30 plus students who have participated in the previous four years of the program in Uganda, approximately 22 have directly benefited from Huawei internship and job opportunities availed to them. For instance, Ms Cleopatra Ajambo who participated in the 2018 Huawei Seeds for the Future program has risen from just a computer science student to an IT network architect working with Huawei Uganda.

As a Computer Science Student, you were expected to dig deep into programming as a major which was not, and is not most girls’ passion, so I found myself relying more on getting good grades than building a career as a problem solver,” says Cleoptra, whose goal for joining the Seeds for future competition was to travel to China for exposure.

The program was launched by H.E Yoweri Museveni in 2016 and has been in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of ICT of Uganda.

DStv unveils new Explora PVR decoder and streaming device

DStv unveils new Explora PVR decoder and streaming device

The parent company to DStv, MultiChoice Group, has unveiled two new devices to be launched soon! A new version of its Explora personal video recorder (PVR) decoder capable of delivering content in resolutions of up to 4K ultra high definition; and a streaming-only box.

The DStv Explora Ultra will let customers easily stream third-party content providers’ services in 4K resolution. These third-party providers are likely to include Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, though MultiChoice hasn’t immediately confirmed which partners it’s working with.

If you are the kind that is interested in an easy and simple way to enjoy content across many services, this is the ideal package for you.

The DStv Explora Ultra features

The new Explora Ultra includes Catch Up, BoxOffice and Showmax – features that were previously available to PVR users. Besides 4K, the decoder also supports Dolby Atmos as long as it is connected to the correct equipment. It also comes with a new remote control. The company itself isn’t offering any 4K content, but this may change in time.

If you wish to move from an existing Explora model, you won’t need to make any changes to your installation. You’ll just simply unplug the older Explora, then plug in the new model using the HDMI cable and power supply packaged with the decoder. A DStv smart LNB and an 80cm satellite dish will also be required.

It is not yet clear exactly when customers will be able to buy the Explora Ultra, but it should be available soon online and in retail outlets and through the company’s service centres and third-party installers.

A new DStv Streama device

It has also introduced a streaming-only box, called the DStv Streama. The Streama is an operator-tier platform, designed and built on top of the RDK platform by a collective of broadcasters (including Sky and Comcast).

RDK was selected because it allows MultiChoice to “deliver the best entertainment experience for our customers while enabling flexibility and security”. Accordingly, its secure environment protects content rights holders.

dstv streama decoder

So, basically, you will need a DStv login, but no active subscription to use the DStv Streama. Then, you will be able to stream content from DStv, Showmax and YouTube as well as stream music via the Joox app, check the weather by using the People’s Weather app and check the latest fixtures, results and scores via the SuperSport app.

No launch date has been set yet for the DStv Streama device and its pricing is also not available yet.

How to maximize your revenue from YouTube videos

How to maximize your revenue from YouTube videos

We all, at one point, watch videos off YouTube – in search for content, music, news, name it. But as we watch all these, we are helping a person or more to earn a few dollars out of their creation. YouTube creators earn money through YouTube’s Partner Program, which allows them to monetize their channels with video ads, placed by Google.

Creators with at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in the past year are eligible to apply and start monetizing their channels through ads, subscriptions, and channel memberships. These ads will make a certain amount of money depending on factors like a video’s watch time, length, and viewer demographic.

Creators on YouTube earn a certain amount of money from a video from AdSense based on their CPM rate, or cost per 1,000 video views. CPM rates vary between creators and no creator will consistently have the same CPM rate. Even channels from the same creator can have very different CPM rates. This is because CPM rates also vary by video.

Advertisers will pay more for an informative, business-related video than a vlog-style video. The rate will also depend on seasonality, with lower CPM rates (or advertising budgets) at the start of the year, and higher ones toward the end.

The most important factors to look at when maximizing how much you’ll earn are the length of a video (which will allow you to add more ads) and the overall watch time.

How to maximize your revenue from YouTube videos

Many creators earn from Google AdSense by lengthening their videos to at least 10 minutes long, which as a result, allows them to include more ads. You can, on average, include about four ads on a single video that’s over 10 minutes long: one pre-roll ad at the start of the video, two in the video, and one post-roll ad after the video is finished.

The key is to place an ad before your viewers will typically “drop off” or click off from your video. Creators have access to the stats and metrics of their channel through YouTube’s creator studio or dashboard.

8 Solutions to Fix SD Card Not Showing Up in Windows 10/8/7

8 Solutions to Fix SD Card Not Showing Up in Windows 10/8/7

There are many reasons why SD card is not detected on Windows 10. If you are experiencing the same issue, you have to exclude the cases one by one to solve this problem. Never hesitate to restart your computer. Most of the time, it settled question. As for unsolved situation, six solutions are provided below to work out the trouble of (micro) SD card not showing up on Windows 10.

1. Try SD Card on Another Device

Sometimes it is the computer interface that breaks, rather than SD card. In this case, just connect your SD card to another computer or Android phone. Alternatively, try another SD card to check the interface. There is no shortcut if you want to test the SD card not recognized or working on Windows 10.

2. Check SD Card in Disk Management

If your SD card doesn’t show up in Windows 10 File System, but in Disk Management, check whether there is a drive letter for the card. Follow the steps below to add a drive letter:

  • Step 1. Right click “My Computer” and select “Disk Management”.
  • Step 2. In Disk Management, your SD card will appear as a removable disk. Check if it has a drive letter like D or E.
  • Step 3. If not, right click the SD card and select “Change Drive Letter and Paths”.
  • Step 4. Click “Add” and select a drive letter, then click “OK”. Your SD card would be working in File System along with local disks.
Check SD Card in Disk Management

3. Remove SD Card Write Protection

There is a knowledge point that write protected SD card will not be displayed on other devices, except the original one. So if you did lock your SD card before, the first thing is to remove write protection from SD card. Check the lock switch beside the card or use disk utility. It can also fix SD card not showing up on Windows 10.

4. Undo Recent Changes

If the SD card is not detected in your computer after installing a new program or system build, then you may roll back your computer to the previous status. A few programs, especially some system utilities, are known as the villains of SD card not showing up problem. You can remove the newly-installed programs to see if the problem still exists. Or, check it Safe mode.
If you believe the program is caused due to a recent system build update, it may be a little troublesome to roll back to a previous version. As an alternative solution, you’re suggested to update SD card driver first which may be out of date after the system update.

5. Reinstall/Update SD Card Driver

When you update Windows 10, it will automatically renew all device drivers. But if you still have problem with a device, it is still well worth a try to update or reinstall the driver. Here’s how to update/reinstall driver to repair (micro) SD card not detected on Windows 10:

  • Step 1. Click “Start” and enter “Device Manager”. Select it from the results.
  • Step 2. Find your SD card and right click it, then select “Update Driver”.
  • Step 3. Select “Search automatically for updated drive software”. If there is no new driver, try to look for one on the manufacturer’s website and follow the installation wizard.
  • Step 4. If it doesn’t work to update driver, just right click the device and select “Uninstall”. Then restart your computer, and Windows will reinstall the driver by itself.

6. Enable SD Card Reader

Disabled SD card will not show up on Windows 10. The steps to enable this function are the same as above. First, find your SD card in “Device Manager” and right click it. If it shows “Disable Device”, then you have already enabled SD card reader and there is no need to do anything. If not, just select the option “Enable Device”. Then Windows 10 could detect your SD card normally. In case it doesn’t, try to enable several related services in your computer as described below.
Enable related services:

  1. Press Windows + R key, then type SERVICES.MSC in Run dialogue and hit Enter.
  2. Locate each of the services, right-click on them and choose Properties, then make them automatic in Startup mode:
    • Human Interface Device Access
    • Plug and Play
    • PNP-X IP Bus Enumerator
    • Shell Hardware Detection
    • Storage Service
    • UPnP Device Host

Restart your computer and then check if the problem is fixed or not.

7. Run Hardware and Device Troubleshooter

Troubleshooter is a built-in repair tool in Windows 10. It helps to fix common computer problems. You can also use it to solve (micro) SD card not detected on Windows 10 problem.

  • Step 1. Click “Settings”> “Update & security”> “Troubleshooter”.
  • Step 2. Select “Hardware and Devices”, then click “Run the troubleshooter”. After detecting the problem, the troubleshooter will fix it automatically.
    Run Hardware and Device Troubleshooter

8. Force Clear Undetected SD Card

If you have tried everything but all are invalid, you may have to force clear the SD card and set it up again. Please note that you will lose all the files stored in the memory card, which could be permanent.

  • Step 1. Click on Start menu, type “CMD”, then right-click on Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  • Step 2. In Command Prompt (Administrator), type the following lines and hit Enter one by one.
    • diskpart
    • list disk
    • select disk # (replace # with the number of the SD card. You can judge by memory size)
    • attributes disk clear readonly
  • Step 3. When you see “Disk attributes cleared successfully” message, close Command Prompt.

Restart your computer, remove and reinsert the SD card, and check if the problem is solved.
